Imagine standing on the mound with three balls two strikes, bases loaded, score tied, what do you do to win the game? The only possible thing… throw a STRIKE! Pitching is one of the most stressful and important positions played in the game of softball. Grace Brantley knows this first hand. Grace has been playing at Tiger Point Park since she was four which means she has been playing for nine seasons. Every week she puts in two practices of about two hours, plus private pitching lessons to become the best player she can be!

She started pitching in her second year playing in the 10 and under age division. Her pitching coach as well as her favorite coach is Coach Steven Mayhew. Coach Steven says, “She shows great sportsmanship and is a team player.” Grace has said she decided to begin pitching because “it looked exciting and fun, and I also wanted to set higher goals for myself.” She doesn’t know exactly how many strikeouts she has but a teammate said that “She is a great pitcher and should keep up the great work.” Her main goal as pitcher is “To throw the best strikes possible!” Grace usually pitches but when she doesn’t, she does her absolute best in the outfield.

Grace truly loves playing softball, so she decided to start playing year round. “I loved playing so much and missed my team that I decided to play more.” Her favorite part of playing softball all year is that she enjoys being part of a team. “Being part of a team and helping my teammates is fun and exciting, and just makes me feel good.” Grace not only plays softball but she enjoys singing. Grace sings for the Pensacola Children’s Chorus (PCC) and performs in all of their performances. Last year she even went on tour with PCC!

Like many athletes, Grace thinks about where she wants to play when she gets older. One question that many athletes are asked is, do you ever think of playing in high school or college? Grace says,  “I have thought of that and I would like to play on the Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphins softball team.” When Grace is in college, she wants to go to Samford to major in music and play softball for the Lady Bulldogs. Grace has high hopes for the future and plans to continue both singing and playing softball!
