Someone once said, “The definition of a softball player is: A girl who, once she steps onto the field is transformed from ‘daddy’s little girl’ into a fierce, unrelenting competitor who will stop at nothing in order to win a game.” This is Payton Wilson. She is a 7th grader at GBMS who excels at everything she does. Payton is a dedicated player who will always go the extra mile. Payton plays softball at the local rec center and used to play for a travel team in Pensacola. Payton is what is called a unit player, so she can play anywhere she is needed. She practices from 1 ½ – 3 ½ hours a day, 2-4 days a week. When asked why she started playing softball she said, “I wanted to start playing because my family and I had always known I was going to play sports, so when I was in 3rd grade my mom let me choose from different sports and I chose softball. I have been playing ever since!” Playing since third grade entails a great amount of dedication along with all her other activities.

Payton’s favorite part about playing softball is, “Being with my friends and learning how to do new strategies and techniques every time I play.” Learning new techniques can make you and your team much stronger as the season progresses. A great coach can be a big difference to having a successful season. Payton has been playing softball for many years and had many coaches contribute to her success. But, hands down her favorite coach would have to be her dad. She said, “My dad has always been supportive through all of the paths I have decided to take. He pushes me to do my best and he helps me reach my full potential with everything that I do. Love you dad!”

Payton’s favorite part of the season is “probably the end of the season, going into all-stars. I like this part of the season because you get to see who the best team out of the whole age division is.”

One special quality about Payton is that she doesn’t just play one sport, but three. These currently include playing soccer for the Gulf Breeze Breakers, playing softball for the local rec, and continuing her lacrosse career this upcoming season. Payton is an amazing athlete.

My dad has always been supportive through all of the paths I have decided to take. He pushes me to do my best and he helps me reach my full potential with everything that I do. Love you dad!”

Many athletes have an older player inspiration, but not Payton. “I learned to love the game as I got older. I was always inspired by my mom, dad, brother and grandmother to try new things and always try my best.” Because Payton has been working so hard on all her sports from a young age she looks forward to playing high school sports. “I would like to play softball in high school, and also play soccer and lacrosse.” Many athletes spend years working toward one goal, finding a sport they love and dedicating their life to it. Payton has already achieved the goal three times! This is why Payton Wilson is the ultimate athlete.
