The 39th annual track meet was held at the high school football field on March 15. Not as many students went this year, but the ones who did said it was really fun. They enjoyed running and hanging out with friends.

In the middle of third period, students participating were called up to eat lunch. Once the students finished eating, they went to the locker rooms to change. Most students put on warm athletic wear to dress for the cold.

The track meet started with the same event this year as it did last year: the mile run; then the 200 meter dash, 400 meter run, 800 meter run, 100 meter dash, 400 meter relay, and finally, the 400 meter co-ed relay. The record holder for the 100 meter dash belongs to Chip Holston, in 1988, with a time of 11.90 seconds.

Laken Harvey, a 7th grade student, attended and said, “It was very fun and interesting.” There weren’t as many athletes this year participating, so only those taking part in an event could go. All grades were combined and went at the same time. Unlike this year, last year all students attended the track meet even if they didn’t run, to watch, and the sixth graders had a separate track meet than the 7th and 8th graders.

Coach Clayton said there were lots of students who will have a successful running career if they continue through high school. One example is 8th grader Finn Youberg. Coach Clayton stated, “…he is an amazing 400 meter and mile runner. He ran a .57 at our County Track Meet and ran a 5:24 Mile Run at our GBMS Meet. So close to our school record!” Coach Stringfellow said Ms. Ratte’s son broke a long jump record in the past. Coach Stringfellow’s favorite
part of the meet is, “…the relays for all grades.”

The track meet is enjoyed by many runners, students, and staff each year. Coach Clayton encourages all students to try it next year. Although not as many students signed up this year, the students who went loved it! See below for results:
