Every new school year brings a host of new 6th grade students to GBMS.  To the older students, these newcomers seem to be getting smaller and smaller each year! This year, The Dolphin Echo staff  decided to interview a few sixth graders to see how their year is going so far.

Sarah Stillman, 6th Grade

“Middle school has more freedom. And with more freedom, comes more responsibility.”

What was it like moving from a one teacher school to a six teacher school?

“Moving from elementary school to middle school wasn’t too hard, because in 5th grade, I had three different teachers, and here in 6th grade, it’s just adding an extra three teachers. So, to me, it isn’t a very hard change.”

How do you feel about the new dress code?

“The dress code in middle school is obviously much different from elementary school, because in 5th grade, we were able to wear almost anything we wanted to. Shoes were strict though. We were not allowed to wear flip flops. But now in 6th grade, the dress code is more precise. I have to wear shirts longer than my waist if I want to wear black leggings.”

Will having six different teachers be difficult to keep up with?

“I don’t think keeping up with six different teachers will too hard to keep up with, because they plan work a lot better.”

How do you feel about the bigger building/campus?

“We’re lucky to have them, and it’s good, but it’s harder to find classes because we have to go through the busiest halls, and because you have to drag your super big backpack everywhere.”

Do you think you had to buy more supplies for this year? And if so, which supply did you buy most?

“I think out of all the supplies I bought, I bought a lot of lead. Lead, lead, lead. But overall, I (also) bought a lot of erasers because we must write a lot more than we did last year. I also got more notebooks, and more binders. The only big change about getting supplies for classes was that we now have to pay lab fees for science classes and more.”

“Middle school has more freedom. And with more freedom, comes more responsibility.”

Patrick Cain, 6th Grade

“#respectthephin. That is what I go off every day.”

What was it like moving from a one teacher school to a six teacher school?

“Moving from one teacher to six teachers was stressful for the first couple days, but it got easier.”

How do you feel about the new dress code?

“I feel like the dress code wasn’t really a problem for me. It didn’t affect me at all.”

Will having six different teachers be difficult to keep up with?

“Personally, I feel it will be harder to keep up with six different teachers, but it should get easier as we go through the year.”

How do you feel about the bigger building/ campus?

“Even though the campus is bigger, and there are more buildings, I’m not too worried because I walk outside to most of my classes.”

Do you think you had to buy more supplies for this year?

“Before school started, I definitely bought more school supplies.”

What do you like about the school?

“I like how this school has many buildings and hallways because you can actually go around and look at all these different classes and how each of the hallways have different styles.”

“#respectthephin. That is what I go off every day.”

Miliani Besabe, 6th Grade

“I like that all the teachers are nice and I feel like we have more freedom.”

What was it like moving from a one teacher school to a six teacher school?

“It’s kind of hard to manage six different teachers, but I like that we have that many. I feel like I’ll be able to handle it better later this year.”

How do you feel about the new dress code?

“I was not at all fond of the dress code here because after I found out about it, my mom and I had to buy all new clothes.”

Will having six different teachers be difficult to keep up with?

“I think it will probably be harder to keep up with six teachers in the middle of the year when you get more homework.”

How do you feel about the bigger building/ campus?

“I like the bigger campus because of all the spread-out classes. We aren’t as crowded as we used to be.”

Do you think you had to buy more supplies for this year?

“Before school started, I didn’t buy more school supplies, but my backpack did definitely get heavier as I added more folders and papers.”

Is there anything at this school that stands out to you?

“This year I would like to join the robotics club, or an art club if they have one.”

“I like that all the teachers are nice and I feel like we have more freedom.”
