Every year, the 7th graders at GBMS take a trip to Pensacola to the Naval Air Station (NAS) Flight Adventure Deck (FAD). There, the students learn about flight, the elements of flying, and what it feels like to fly.

As soon as the students get off the bus, they are divided into groups according to last name. Each group has their own leader to take the students around different parts of the museum. Activities included a simulator of a real cockpit in which students can soar through the sky and practice landing and taking off. After the simulators, the students experience a series of hands-on activities, such as a demonstration of what would happen to your head if it encountered high altitude and low air pressure. Also, students can feel the weight of the highest point and the lowest point on earth.

In a separate museum, there are many real planes that students can walk into and experience what it would feel like if they were sitting in a real cockpit. The students are required to measure the F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, F8F Bearcat with a tape measure and a plumb bob, a string with a weight on the end. “Seeing the students’ excitement about the airplanes was my favorite part of the field trip,” states 7th grade math teacher Mr. Dennis Dolfie.
