community and school. NJHS aims to give 8th grade students an opportunity to help others. NJHS is not an elective. It is an organization that meets after school once a month to discuss upcoming events and how to perform services to our community and those in need. But it’s not all hard work. NJHS sprinkles in fun through ice cream socials, silly games, and an end of the year bowling trip.

The society only accepts 8th grade students who have an average grade of a 93 or above throughout 6th and 7th grade.  To qualify for NJHS, the student must have never received a referral. At the end of the year, NJHS will contact any 7th grade students who have met the requirements. If they wish to join, they will start NJHS at the beginning of their 8th grade year.

In the words of NJHS members, what is NJHS?

Amber Collins says, “NJHS is a wonderful thing you can do to help others and feel good knowing that you are contributing to the community.”

Sarah Marks explains NJHS as a “fun organization where you can help the school and the community.”

Deanna Harwell describes NJHS, “NJHS is a place where 8th graders alike come together in order to see how we can benefit our community and the people in our school.”

Will Kemp says that NJHS is “a school organization that is designed to raise money for those in need.”

The organization includes four committees called Scholarship, Service, Character, and Citizenship.

Scholarship focuses on academic aid. They tutor, assist teachers, and help students read at GBES. Sarah Marks, the leader of the Scholarship committee comments on being a committee leader, “It’s a big responsibility, but it’s fun.” She states that she enjoys hanging out with the members of NJHS.

Service focuses on monetary aid. Their goal is to raise money for those in need. Natalia Dadisman, Service, says that the service committee organizes fundraisers to help other organizations. Just one example of the many fundraisers that Service has done is selling eye block on the black top.

Character focuses on the community. Their goal is to help out whenever they can. They do can drives, Veteran’s Breakfast, and are planning on creating a Relay for Life Booth. “Our committee does random acts of kindness, and we do what we can to help out within the school,” explains Deanna Harwell, a member of the Character committee. Character, overall, strives to strengthen character values in the community by helping through service contributions.

Citizenship focuses on the school. Their goal is to help out as often as possible within GBMS.  They created posters for homecoming, and cleaned up after NJHS marched in the Gulf Breeze Christmas Parade. They hope to make the community a better place by encouraging a sense of community and citizenship within the school.

The four committees work together to help the school and community through service projects, donations, fundraisers, and hard work.

NJHS is an awesome organization that brings out the best in our fantastic school. Keep it in mind for your 8th grade year.
