Zach Giovanni, 7th grade, started running in September of 2016. Although he just recently began, he is already excelling. He is part of Running Club and participated in the GBMS track meet.

He started running at the beginning of his 6th grade year, when he wanted to be more athletic. He says, “My friend and I wanted to do running club in 6th grade, so I started practicing and I really liked it.” He hasn’t stopped practicing since. He runs after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and on the weekends.

Now he can run a mile in five minutes and 47 seconds, which is only two minutes longer than the fastest mile ever run, in three minutes and 43 seconds.

Zach Giovanini, 7th grade, brandishes his award at the Double Bridge Run after placing fourth overall.

Zach also stood out at the GBMS track meet. He placed first in the 200-meter run, and third in the mile run. His time for the mile was five minutes and 49 seconds, close to his record. He says that he had a lot of fun, he felt good about his time, but he was nervous to run in front of the entire school.

Zach loves all forms of running, but he most frequently participates in long-distance runs.

His favorite length to run is 3.1 miles, the distance of a 5K. He participates in many 5Ks, including the Ho-Ho Hustle and Double Bridge Run. He placed first in his age group for both runs and was fourth overall in the Double Bridge Run.

“I do 5Ks often, and I normally place high. My record time is 19 minutes and 32 seconds,” he says.

Zach states his goals for running: “I want to be able to run a mile in under five minutes.” He also hopes to eventually try the Rock and Roll Marathon.

Zach has been working hard for the past two years. If he keeps the same mindset, his goals may not be far away.
