On Saturday, April 28, Lauren Saiter, 7th grade, flew on a plane. But why is it such a big deal? Lots of people fly on planes every day. The difference is that Lauren actually flew the plane!

Going to fly the plane

It was Friday, and Lauren’s mom told her to set an alarm for 7:00 a.m. She was a bit puzzled, but didn’t question it. So Lauren set the alarm and woke up at seven. Once her mom acknowledged Lauren was up, she told her to get dressed and be ready by 8:00 a.m. Now Lauren got even more suspicious. What was going on? Her grandpa pulled up to her house and asked if she knew what was going on. Lauren said no, but her grandpa didn’t tell her. They drove to Pensacola International Airport (PNS), and stopped at a building that had the name Sky Warrior written on it. Then her grandpa asked, “Now do you know what we’re doing?” It turns out Lauren was going to be flying a plane, a Cessna 172 to be exact.

Why did she fly?

When Lauren got her surprise it wasn’t just any other weekend. It was the weekend before her birthday, so it was an early surprise to celebrate. But why fly a plane instead of go out to her favorite restaurant? Well, recently she has been interested in aviation and aerodynamics. Lauren says, “It was very interesting seeing how the plane actually works.”

Where did Lauren fly?

Lauren was in the plane with a flight instructor and her grandpa. They flew from PNS to the Navarre-Pensacola Beach area. The flight instructor let her fly for about half the time they were flying. Through doing this, Lauren’s dreams took to the sky!
