Although hurricane season does not start until June 1, this year started early with a depression in the Gulf at the beginning of May. Then Subtropical Storm Alberto threatened the coast during Memorial Day weekend.

Every season we should make sure we have we have the preparation list completed and ready to go in case a hurricane hits our area. First of all, know where to go. If your area is ordered to evacuate, know the hurricane route(s) to take and have a plan for where you can temporarily stay. Second of all, put together a go-bag: disaster supply kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, medications, and copies of your critical information if you need to evacuate. For more preparedness tips and information, visit https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes.

Hurricanes started being tracked in the 1870s in Cuba. Father Benito Vines was the first person to start tracking the hurricanes and after his death, hurricane warnings were taken over by the United States. As the years have passed, technology has grown and now the National Weather Service even names the hurricanes each year. The names for the 2018/2019 season are Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sara, Tony, Valerie, William.

Let’s hope we make it through another season without a hurricane in our area, but remember to be prepared just in case and help your family out in any way you can.
