Every year students in the GBMS band get to go to the Saenger Theater in Pensacola to perform the pieces they worked on for almost 2 months. This year’s concert was at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15.

This concert was extra special to the students and band director Ms. Smithey because it was dedicated to her father who recently passed away. He never missed any concert and was always a huge supporter of the band.

The students put their full focus on the songs to be able to play something amazing for the 1200  people who showed up to the event. The concert was free but there were snacks for sale and a full DVD of the concert was made.  The DVD was videotaped by a professional photographer to make sure it was of the highest quality.

The concert started with a speech from Mr. Brandon and Ms. Smithey. After these welcome messages, Beginning Band played their songs such as “Wipe Out” and “What a Wonderful World”. After they played these songs, the following students received Outstanding Musician awards:

1st period: Sabrina Beasley, Evie Weber, Orion Beckler, and Josh Kamm
2nd period: Lauren Hitchcock, Emma Toms, Luke White, and Nicholas Khan
4th period: Patrick Cain and Jimmy Winchester
5th period: Sarah Hicks, Tori Wells, Gabriel Smith, and Cooper Carlock

Then Varsity Band had a student speaker, played songs such as “Pirates of The Caribbean” and “The Sound of Music” and received their awards. These students are Varsity Band Outstanding Musicians: Lauren Ware, Cameran Vierthaler, John Bleiler and Ian Gonzales.

After this portion, multiple student speakers thanked and complimented Ms. Smithey about her amazing teaching skills and personality. When they finished, they gave Ms. Smithey a gift and some flowers. Symphonic Band played their pieces including “How to Train Your Dragon,” and “Darklands March,” and afterwards their awards were given to multiple students.

Symphonic Band Outstanding Musicians: Olivia Hoffman, Eliot Suttman, Adrienne Flowers, Jasper Bragg, Paul Palewicz, and Brandon Collins
ALL-STATE STUDENT: Adrienne Flowers
TWO BAND SPIRIT AWARDS: Ty Risola and Christopher Viglione
LEADERSHIP: Natalia Mercado
OUTSTANDING BANDSMAN: Alex White

After the awards, the show closed. The students packed up the truck with all the school-owned instruments and left for the night, perhaps stopping for some ice cream or other treat on the way home.

The next day, the students received notes from their parents that were passed out at the beginning of the show to write on. The students discussed the concert, sharing the good parts and also doing some self-critique. Overall, the concert was a big hit, and everyone enjoyed it. It was also very important to everyone to honor Ms. Smithey’s father.
