Turn Left at the Cow is a previous Sunshine State Young Readers Award book by Lisa Billard who has written many children’s books. This book is about a boy named Travis (or Trav) whose mother recently remarried and ever since has been acting differently. Travis decides to travel from California to Minnesota to his grandma’s, without his mom knowing, hoping he will find out more about his past and his mysterious dead father. While he is at his grandma’s, he meets the next door neighbors Kenny and Kenny’s cousin Iz. The last thing he expects for them to tell him is that his dad supposedly robbed a bank right before he disappeared, and the money is still missing. To make matters worse, there is a guy who lives in town who doesn’t seem to be too fond of Trav.

Trav and his neighbors decide to go out looking for the loot, but they come up short. One day some of the money turns up at a local store and many begin to believe it was Trav’s considering he was at the store the same day. Travis and his friends become suspicious of his grandma because she gave him the money for the store. However, they can’t find much evidence to connect her to the crime. Trav begins to wonder more about his dad. Could he still be alive? Could he have had an accomplice? Trav, Kenny, and Iz’s fun game soon becomes dangerous when they realize they aren’t the only ones looking for the money. Trav receives a note threatening him to bury the money on a certain spot on the island to give the person the money “or else.”

This is an exciting mystery book that will keep you reading. Once you start you will not be able to stop. Coral Coad, 7th grade, said, “I liked this book because it was a mystery and I loved trying to solve it.”
