On Tuesday, May 15, a group of students attended a field trip to the Navarre Beach Marine Science Center. Students and student assistants of the ESE department had lots of fun and excitement when they participated in events such as kayaking, catching fish with tools like nets and shrimp pumps, researching marine mammals and fish, touching creatures in the touch tank, and learning the important uses of sand.

During the trip the students were organized into four groups and switched stations to learn the most they could. In the kayaking station they also caught fish and even a sea horse with nets. “I’ve never been kayaking, and I loved it!” said Lorelai Hart.

At the research station, they learned about marine mammals and fish of the sea like sharks, whales, and dolphins. They even got to hold a real dead shark in a bag. “The research station was my favorite because the kids were excited to learn new things,” said Mrs. Curran.

“My favorite was the touch tank because the starfish are cool and grow back their limbs,” said Austin Snyder. In the touch tank they had horse shoe crabs, sea orchids, and other fish like the flounders. They also learned what the lion fish are and how they are destroying our beautiful reefs. The last station was the detective sand station where they learned about the important uses of sand and how detectives can use it in crime scenes. Josh Bazzel 8th,“I liked the sand station because I liked putting my hands in the sand and looking at sea shells.”

The field trip was for the students and student assistants to have fun and interact before the end of the year. The marine science station was perfect for it because everyone can have fun doing many different activities. The touch tank, kayaks, research, and sand station, were great to participate in.
