“Professional Development Day,” we’ve all seen it on the school calendar while searching for holidays. When those three words are seen, students eagerly and automatically think early release, but what goes on in the classroom after the bell rings? For students, these days are spent “walking,” hanging out with friends, or just enjoying extra time at home.

For teachers, these days “allow teachers and staff to work on strategies to help their students,” says principal Mr. Michael Brandon. Each year there are three professional development days, one in each of the first three nine weeks. Often, there isn’t enough time in a regular day for teachers to collaborate in a school setting. Teachers and staff meet in the library where they train. Mr. Brandon and Mrs. Murphy choose training that helps teachers in practical ways so that each time teachers have something to take away from it. “If it isn’t useful, we don’t do it.” says Mr. Mark Sebastian, language arts teacher.

Professional development is important to the staff’s strength in their daily practice, as they continue to learn new ways to teach and handle different situations as opposed to, for example, one teacher learning a strategy twenty years ago and never picking up any new ones. Facultyfocus.com’s “Making the Most of Professional Development Days,” states, “It is easy to get comfortable with our teaching routines; to forget that teaching is important work, work that matters, makes a difference, and changes lives. Workshop days can give faculty the opportunity to renew and refill low energy reserves.” With new techniques taught on these days, students not only benefit from having half a day off, but also from having prepared, energized teachers in the classroom.
