GBMS tutoring has already begun! On Tuesdays and Thursdays, kids who need help academically can gather in the library accompanied by a teacher and NJHS Scholarship Committee students. NJHS has been tutoring since just last year. Here goes round two!

That same year that NJHS started tutoring, there were almost a hundred kids who qualified for NJHS. So, Ms. Karen Gilbreath and Ms. Kelly Ratte met over that summer to plan out how to make this all work with so many students. As a result, the group was divided into committees; the Scholarship, Character, Citizenship, and Service committees. They also decided the activities that each committee would best fit. One of the activities that NJHS was assigned was tutoring. Mrs. Tara Turk says, “It’s a great opportunity for NJHS to help out…”

Tutoring can be challenging for NJHS students as some the students are the same age, so explaining something can be challenging. Another challenge maybe that one student will have a different way of learning than the tutor. Brandon Collins, 8th grade, is one of the students in the NJHS Scholarship Committee who helped volunteer recently. He says that people learn differently so you have to adapt to their way of learning in order to help them.

Connor Devanney, 8th grade, says that explaining how to do everything correctly and keeping students on task is a challenge.

Kids are more likely to learn more from kids who are bit older than them. Psychology Today, “Why We Should Stop Segregating Children by Age: Part 3,” says, “Children are much more interested in other children that in (adults). Children are especially interested in, and ready to learn from, those others who are a little older than themselves, a little farther along in their development, but not too far along…”

Ms. Turk says, “I think most kids would rather be tutored by an older kid than an adult- especially after listening to teachers all day…it’s a great way for kids to get help with homework- especially the kids who don’t have parents at home after school.”

Aidan Twing says, “…they understand me better.”

So, if you are struggling and need help, why not consider tutoring after school in the library?
