Coraline is children’s horror film full of twists and turns you would never expect! This stop-motion film takes place when a young girl who recently moved into a creepy old house encounters some strange things. The people around her are not your average neighbors. She lives on the floor below a weird blue man who makes mice circuses, and the floor above two old women who can tell the future with tea leaves and stuff their dead dogs, and next door to an awkward boy named Wybie and his stray cat. Her parents are always busy, leaving her to wander around by herself. One day she finds a bricked-off passage behind a small door in her living room. That night, she dreams of mice leading her to the passage, which is now open, and into a new world made by “the other mother.” In “the other mother’s” world, everyone’s main concern is making Coraline happy. At first, it seems like this other world is perfect, but soon, things make a turn for the worst.

WHAT IS THIS PLACE? Coraline dines with the “Other Mother” and“Other Father” for the first time.

This movie caught my attention for the first time many years ago, when I was around five or six years old. I was absolutely star-struck by the film and I’ve watched it at least twenty times since then. Coraline has a unique plot that sucks the audience right in! One of the things that really makes the film so interesting is the big buttons sewn onto the eyes of the characters in the world beyond the small door. The buttons play a large role towards the end of the movie, when Coraline is offered to stay in this not-so-perfect world forever. This movie is so unpredictable, you would never guess what’s next!

You can find Coraline on Netflix, Amazon, or on DVD. It has 90% rotten tomatoes and great reviews. One main issue brought up by many parents who watched the movie believe that the film’s PG rating is wrong. There are 2 instances that some parents would find “inappropriate” for children. The two main parts of the movie that raised a few objections were the tightrope dancing scene made by the two old women Coraline visits. This scene has brief nudity, and even though it’s animation, this did not need to be a part of the scene. Another scene a majority believed could have been avoided was where Coraline is chasing a mouse that holds the last “children’s eye.” The stray cat from earlier in the movie catches the mouse, but instead of just laying the dead mouse down, the cat bites into it. Although the blood does not look real, it still raised some red flags from the audience.

Overall this was a great movie that I recommend to everyone. I give Coraline a 9/10-star rating.
